This is a type of rice cake made by adding unrefined rice wine to nonglutinous rice powder, kneading, and letting the dough ferment before steaming with dehulled and powdered red beans. This folk dish of Gangneung is notable as it uses unrefined rice wine and warm water to let the dough rise. Because it is made with unrefined rice wine, its texture becomes quite soft. The addition of unfiltered rice wine also means that this rice cake can be kept longer, even in summer. In contrast to the standard Jeungpyeon (raised rice cake), the bangul jeungpyeon of the Gangneung region adds a mound of dehulled and powdered red beans like that of duteoptteok (rice cake with nut filling), so it gives the dish its characteristic name and appearance.
