This steamed rice dish is made with stir-fried barnacles. Barnacles are a local specialty of Ulleungdo Island, where it grows in abundance along the coastal rock formations. They are also called “satgat jogae” in Korean because their shape resembles that of conical hats (satgat). In Ulleungdo Island, they are called “ttagaebi.” Ttagaebi bap is a dish popular among the residents of Ulleungdo Island, and it has gone on to capture the attention of visitors as well. After all, it is a specialty that one can only have on Ulleungdo Island. Peer into the bowl and find the barnacle flesh hiding among the freshly-cooked steamed rice. Put a spoonful of sauce into the rice, mix the rice well, and take a spoonful of the sea’s fragrance. Barnacles are smaller in size than abalone, but they resemble abalone in texture, as well as a rich taste that unfolds as one chews.
